Wifi Video Glitch

I saw this today and was a bit annoyed. I recently purchased an Icom IR-3 and the DD9000 seems to have a greater upper range to capture 2.4Ghz RF video (the Icom can only capture channels 1 2 and sometimes 3, not 4 or above). This seems like a much better solution for picking up stray video signals. I even tried making my own cantenna to help the R3’s shoddy antennas to no avail. Anyway – I was reminded that 2.4Ghz is also the realm of 802.11b wireless networking. Each network in wifi is given a channel, which is 22Mhz wide – channel 1 2.412 Ghz ,2 2.417 Ghz,3 2.422 Ghz, 4 2.427 Ghz, 5 2.432 Ghz, 6 2.437 Ghz, 7 2.442 Ghz, 8 2.447 Ghz, 9 2.452 Ghz, 10 2.457 Ghz, 11 2.462 Ghz, 12 2.467 Ghz, 13 2.472 Ghz and channel 14 2.484 Ghz

2.4 Ghz RF Video on the other hand typically uses 2.411, 2.434, 2.453, and 2.473 GHz for channels 1 through 4 (although Ive seen this vary from vendor to vendor). Anyhow. I tuned the R3 to the frequency of my home wifi network and started paying attention. Generating lots of bandwidth created a visible change in how the R3 interpreted the analog RF signal. Note that wifi is (as far as my understanding is concerned) analog RF with a digital signal encapsulated in it. The R3 does its best to interpret the signal as video.

Fun stuff. The R3 is quite interesting in that you can visualize anything on the air between around 1Hz to 2.4Ghz.. I love the visual surpises some sources give you, and best of all is when you stumble across an actual video source…
