Windows Media Component for Quicktime…

…is now now free, thanks for Flip4Mac and Microsoft teaming up. This is great news. As we all know, Windows Media Player for OS X is really just awful. Apprently someone at Microsoft realized this, and discontinued Media Player for Mac, and just pointed to developers that could do a better job of porting code and integrating it to the OS.

The Flip4Mac component is now version 2.0, which supposedly supports WMV 10 format and HD playback, as well as other advanced encoding options (encoding requires studio which is a paid upgrade from the free player). Great to be able to get rid of Windows Media Player and actually be able to watch movies on the web without horrid buffering, stalling and beachballing. Now to get people to stop encoding movies with Windows Media format…

Oh. Yeah: Intel Macs were announced today too.
